American University will formulate a terms of use policy for the popular student website Facebook, next month.
The plan comes amidst growing interest of employers in using Facebook to garner information about potential new hires. The university wants students to be ofiicially made aware of the consequences of their online posts.
A recent case at George Washington University involved the administration becoming aware of a party through Facebook's "Party Central" link. There was illegal drinking at a particular party, and the school shut it down. Students later retaliated by having a similar party but serving cake labeled "beer" instead. They also played cake pong. The party was not shut down.
While we thank AU for being concerned about our employment prospects, we feel they should let students be when it comes to Facebook. All of us are aware that our pictures and wall posts are available to many people, and it should be up to us to regulate our own profiles.
Many people just show off for their peers on Facebook and with that being said, their resumes are a far better source for finding out what they have to offer than a glorified diary.
