Staff editorial: Laptops not for class

It's not even a week into class, and many AU students may find they are already being interrupted or distracted by their fellow classmates piddling on their laptops in class.

Many students legitimately use their computers to take notes, but we can't help but remember how seemingly many more chat on AIM or check scores on ESPN, update Facebook and partake in games of Snood. If you have ever been right behind or next to someone who was "taking notes" you know what it is like- fingers flying across the keyboard, chuckling to themselves.

Many professors have asked students not to use laptops in class at all. It may not be entirely necessary to have a computer in class, but those that honestly take better notes typing are penalized because of those who do not.

It remains to be understood why someone would actually go to class if all they plan on doing is playing games. They would be better served to just sleep longer or just sit at their desk and play games. Distracting fellow students is not acceptable because your block is running longer than you would like.

So, if you find yourself to be one of the aforementioned laptop offenders and still need a new year's resolution, try this: leave it in the room.
