AU mile runners dominated at the Maryland Invitational in Landover, Md., Saturday as senior Keira Carlstrom and junior Brendan Fennell won the women's and men's miles, respectively.
Carlstrom had no trouble in the women's mile, breaking out into the lead early. She cut away in the final half of the race finishing with a time of 4:53.40, six seconds ahead of her closest competitor. Freshman Mary Maloney finished sixth with a time of 5:16.78.
The men's mile was dominated by AU runners, with three of them finishing in the top five. Fennell was ahead of the pack for most of the race, followed by fellow AU runner freshman Kevin Tschirhart.
The AU runners were clearly ahead of the pack for most of the race. Fennell finished easily in first place with the fourth-fastest indoor mile in AU history at 4:09.30. Tschirhart finished second with a time of 4.14.47. Finishing fifth was Conor Lanz with a time of 4:20.12.
Fennell's time was the fastest time this year in the Patriot League. It was also the fastest mile ever for an AU athlete at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex.
The AU men's squad was also victorious in the distance medley race. The men's team of Dan Beardslee, Dustin Emrani, Steve Hallinan and Brain McCabe won the distance medley with a time of 10:08.20, ten seconds ahead of runner-up Georgetown.
Other notables included junior Alex Caudana, who finished fourth in the men's 800-meter run. Caudana's time of 1:56.89 was just .37 seconds behind the winner.
The next meet for AU will be Jan. 28 at the George Mason Patriot Games.
