In Comedy Central's latest album release, Mike Birbiglia presents his intelligent, original and hysterically funny humor on his second stand-up album, "Two Drink Mike."
Recorded live at the D.C. Improv theater last December, Birbiglia makes the mundane funny from the get-go. Starting with his annoyance at the mispronunciation of his last name, Birbiglia then moves through his repertoire of hilarious situations and, best of all, his less-than-subtle analogies.
The funniest bit on the album, entitled "Whiffle Ball Tony," compares President Bush with the likes of a whiffle ball enthusiast who aggressively challenges the neighbors to a games of whiffle ball before throwing burgers at them, despite the fact that they have none to throw back at him.
From there Birbiglia is able to make the Lincoln assassination, Kenny G, bear attacks, religious rock 'n' roll and even terrorism funny.
The album's namesake, "Two Drink Mike" is a riotous series of stories about drinking at the Laundromat, pretending to captain a ship and the absurdity of sports analogies in drinking.
Near the end of the album, tracks like "Dammit I'm Eatin' Pretzels" show Birbiglia's simple humor. In this track he shares stories about his parents, comparing them to cavemen because they are more than behind when it comes to technology (his mother asks for him to fax something back to her because it was her only copy).
The one downside to the album comes at the very end, when Birbliglia picks up a guitar and begins playing decent chords with less than funny lyrics. He sings about his annoyance at "the guitar guy at the party," not realizing that his guitar work, too, is annoying.
Also, in addition to a hilarious 16-track CD, this album comes with a full-length DVD featuring Birbiglia on "Comedy Central Presents," "Premium Blend" and "Shorties Watchin' Shorties"
