Class of 2007 Senator Nick Johnson resigned from his position after being pressured with impeachment charges by the Undergraduate Senate. Johnson, who served two terms in the former General Assembly, is currently studying abroad in London.
The impeachment charges, filed by Charlie Biscotto, Class of 2008 senator, requested the timely removal of Johnson from office and were a compelling factor in Johnson's resignation.
In his letter of resignation, Johnson urged the Senate to be cautious when appropriating money, saying the Senate should insure that money spent is truly benefiting the student body.
When contacted in London about his resignation, Johnson said he never abandoned his office, and wanted to thank those who elected him last fall.
The Senate amended the SG bylaws at their last meeting, adding procedures that allow for the impeachment and removal from office of any member of the Student Government, whether elected or appointed.
An amendment co-sponsored by Class of 2008 Senators Patrick McGill and Charlie Biscotto, and approved by the Senate, added that any member of the Student Government who fails to resign from their position while studying abroad may also be impeached and removed from office.
Chris Sgro, speaker of the Senate, is responsible with nominating someone to the now vacant Class of 2007 seat, who the Senate will then vote on.
