AU three wins scholar athlete awards

Cross country's Steve Hallinan and Keira Carstrom and field hockey's Maureen Daniel were named the Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the year in their respective sports, the league announced this week.

Daniel, a senior, became the third AU field hockey player to win the award in the last four years. The PL Defensive Player of the Year helped the team to a win in the NCAA tournament fall while maintaining a 3.88 grade point average.

Carlstrom earned the third cross-country scholar-athlete award of her career. The senior registered a 3.80 GPA last fall and finished sixth at the NCAA Championships for AU's best-ever performance in the event.

Hallinan won the award in his sophomore season. On the courses, he took first in the George Mason and Navy invitationals and helped the Eagles to the NCAA Championships.

LoPiccolo cracks wrestling top 10

AU sophomore wrestler Adam LoPiccolo improved his ranking to No. 10 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association poll, putting three Eagles in the top 10 for the first time ever.

On Sunday the heavyweight pinned Sacred Heart's Payam Zarrinpour, who was ranked 11th. It avenged LoPiccolo's loss to him earlier this season and helped boost him in the rankings. LoPiccolo was ranked No 13 going into Sunday's match and now has his highest ranking ever.

Josh Glenn, also a sophomore, is ranked No. 2 among 185-pounders. Undefeated senior Muzaffar Abdurakhmanov is No. 4 at 165 pounds.

Thiel earns weekly swimming award

Sophomore swimmer Meghan Thiel was named the Patriot League's swimmer of the week, the league announced Monday.

She won the 500 and 1,000 freestyles last weekend at George Mason.

Thiel also owns the conference's best times this year in the 500, 1,000 and 1,650 freestyles.

The AU men's tennis team didn't win a set in a 7-0 loss at Virginia Tech Wednesday.
