Staff editorial: Basketball brouhaha

A recruiting brochure for AU's men's basketball team caused an uproar and threats to pull funding for next weekend's Phil Bender festivities.

The Graduate Student Leadership Council and Women's Initiative planned to hold their wallets if the basketball office did not apologize for advertising D.C. as the " Number 1 place to find babes," which they deemed disrespectful. We do too.

AU's campus is over 60 percent female, not to mention people are usually, more or less, politically correct around here. Whether or not the comment was meant to be tongue-in-cheek or not seen as offensive at all, it was printed on official AU documents under the school's letterhead. We should have more pride in the way we present ourselves than to put out such offensive material.

Other schools such as the University of Colorado have had problems with athletics demeaning women, and AU does not want to become yet another statistic. That was for last fall.

We are glad the situation was worked out, and we hope everyone helps fill Bender this Saturday
