Over four hundred students danced the night away at the Mayflower Hotel Saturday night at the annual Founder's Day Ball. The band and DJ had the crowd jamming and cha-cha sliding, and chocolate fountains and quesadillas kept everyone well-fed. The students who attended were diverse, there were no labels. For one night, we were just AU. We would like to commend SG vice president Leah Kreimer for a job extremely well done.
Interim President Neil Kerwin and his wife were in attendance, and mingled with students. It is refreshing to have an administrator engage the student body, and at an off-campus event nontheless. Dr. Kerwin drained free throws during halftime at Saturday's Phil Bender game like it was his job. It's also nice to have an administrator who does more than just sit and sip water (water?) at the game.
But despite the strides made towards improving school spirit, something AU is often criticized for lacking, we're still waiting for improvement in other areas. The board of trustees met this weekend, but made very little progress on the governance issues that will ensure a more stable future for the school. Wating until May's board meeting means AU students will lose some of their most vocal advocates to graduation. Students For A New AU is working to keep these issues on the forefront, but they need to find a new cause. Ben Ladner is gone, and his money isn't coming back. If the group wants to remain relevant they need to lobby the board to get things right this time around, and remind them we can't be blocked out of this process.
