Survey: AU students' alcohol usage higher than national average

670 freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors responded to AU's Core survey, which was distributed in February 2005. The purpose of the survey was to raise awareness about alcohol on AU's campus.

On average, AU students' rates of usage are slightly higher than national averages.

78.5% acknowledged using alcohol at least once; (72% is the national sample) 23% acknowledged using marijuana; (18.8% is the national sample)

When asked how often the average AU student drinks, respondents said that 29% drink once or more a week or less. In reality, 61% of students at AU drink once a week or less.

What are the consequences of AU students' use of alcohol and drugs?

16% of the respondents report being in trouble with police or university personnel; 37% report being in an argument or fight; 12% report being taken advantage of sexually; 22% performed poorly on a test or project; 28% missed class; 46% did something they later regretted;

How does other students' drinking and drug use affect other students?

40% said the other students' drinking interrupted their studying; 35% said it messed up their living space; 30% said it interfered in other ways; (Prevented them from enjoying a concert, show, athletic event and disrupted or disturbed other activities.)
