The AU men's and women's track teams competed at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md., Saturday, grabbing three first-place finishes and recording personal bests for several team members.
The Eagles dominated the men's 1,500-metet run, pulling a one-two-three sweep when Brendan Fennell, Brian McCabe and Steve Hallinan placed first, second and third, respectively. Fennell and McCabe also posted personal bests in that race, with Fennell's time of 3 minutes 39.49 seconds, rating sixth on the AU all-time top 10, while McCabe's time of 3:51.02 put him at eighth on that list.
AU's Awit Yohannes took first place in the men's 5,000, while teammate Phil Turner finished fourth. Other strong finishes for the men included Rob Hofmann's second-place finish in the 3,000 and the 800, where Carlos Jamieson and Conor Lanz finished second and third, respectively.
The AU women had an impressive meet as well, including Keira Carlstrom's victory in the women's 800. The win marked a good beginning for the senior, who has been training for the 5,000 and 10 kilometer races in hopes of becoming an All-American and qualifying for the NCAAs.
"I was happy with [the win] because I've been doing a lot speed work recently," Carlstrom said. "But this was a good start to the season."
Teammate Zaia Wharton finished third in the 800, breaking her own personal school record. Kate Lilley and Mary Moloney each posted personal bests in the women's 1,500, while Meghan Mason broke and AU record in the women's 5,000, coming in fourth with a time of 18:22.29. That put her sixth on the AU all-time top 10 list.
"This weekend everybody did really well," Carlstrom said. "Everybody showed up with a great attitude and ready to race. The team did especially well posting all the personal bests."
The Eagles will next compete this Saturday in the Terrapin Invitational in College Park, Md.
