Howard spoils home opener for women's tennis

The AU women's tennis team was defeated by Howard Sunday, 4-3.

The doubles matches were tight, with Howard winning two of them by an 8-4 margin to capture the doubles point.

The AU tandem of Julia Colarusso and Malvina DeLaCanal won the third doubles match for the Eagles

Things were going well at first for AU in singles play, as Colarusso's opponent, Aja Wright, retired because of an injury in the beginning of the first set.

DeLaCanal easily defeated Jasmine Wright, 6-1, 6-3, to give that the doubles-winning team singles wins for AU's first two points of the match.

But the Bison then came back, winning three of their single matches. Sometimes they inflicted bitter defeats to AU, such as Laura Marin defeating Ali Harrison, 6-0, 6-0. AU's Brandi Kligman's victory against Cecelia Townes, 6-2, 6-4, was not sufficient to let the Eagles win the competition, for Howard's Paige Fenn and Nicole Henderson defeated Merrissa Hollinger and Alison Schmidt in the last part of the match.

AU's next match is at Towson on Saturday.
