Staff editorial: AU should divest itself from Darfur

The rampant genocide that has been occuring in the Darfur region of Sudan has garnered international attention. However, what it has not garnered thus far is large scale divestment from the country.

We feel that AU should have nothing to do with profitting ffrom a country that savagely and nonchalantly allows the slaughter of millions of its people. Yale, Harvard, Dartmouth and Stanford have already made plans to divest, as well as the states of New Jersey, Delaware, Arizona and Illinois.

Some Chinese oil companies operate in Sudan. Many schools and governments invest in these companies, becoming unwitting accomplices in the Sudanese civil war over oil between the north and south.

We feel that AU should join other prestigous colleges and universities in pulling our capital from the country until the situation on the ground changes. Hopefully the economic loss combined with world diplomatic pressure will bring both sides to the table and off the

battlefield.
