American University's student radio station does not live up to station billing. We can't blame them since they have been undercut by the institution it is here to serve.
Only available through an Internet stream and iTunes, a call sign would be a welcome change-the audience would increase and hosts could actually feel like they're reaching people. In 2000, the school moved the station to Mary Graydon Center from the media production center and sold their equipment and call sign unbeknownst to students. The station is currently looking at partnering with Georgetown and GW to get a call sign and share airtime. We are firmly behind the station in this goal.
With the increased focus AU is putting on the arts with the new Katzen Center and expanded audio programs, the radio station could be a valuable tool in recruiting prospective students. Students in SOC interested in radio wouldn't have to rely only on internships, but could practice the craft steps from their dorm room.
In recent years, the leadership of WVAU has been working to change the status quo. We are hopeful that they will train and mentor students to make the station both informative and fun.
