AU narrowly tops George Mason

Colarusso gets decisive win

Thursday's women's tennis match between AU and George Mason came down to the singles match between each team's No. 1 player. That was where junior Julia Colarusso won in three sets, giving the Eagles a 4-3 victory.

Colarusso defeated George Mason's Andrea Fusea, 7-5, 6-4, 1-0 (5).

"I feel really good about this victory," Colarusso said. "I wasn't too worried after losing the second set. She was a really a tough opponent."

The win helped AU bounce back from Tuesday's 4-2 loss to Mount St. Mary's. Coach Carol Daniels was disappointed about the lost and had a talk with the team on Wednesday, so she was happy about the turnaround.

"I was a little surprised how quickly we were able to rebound and come back after our talk on Wednesday," Daniels said. "I thought we played real well today and it was good to get the victory."

AU is 2-5 after the win over George Mason (8-7).

Sophomore Malvina DeLaCanal won the No. 2 singles match, 6-4, 6-1.

Senior Brandi Kligman won her No. 5 singles match, 6-3, 6-4.

After dropping the first set, Allison Schmidt rallied to win the No. 6 singles match, 2-6, 6-1, 1-0 (6).

No. 3 and No. 4 singles Ali Harrison and Merrisa Hollinger dropped their single matches, both in two sets.

George Mason swept AU in all three doubles matches to earn the point.

On deck for AU is a home showdown with Georgetown Wednesday afternoon.
