The AU men's soccer team tied Lafayette in a rematch of their PL title game from a season ago. The result dropped the Eagles to 0-0-1 in league play and 3-4-1 overall.
In front of a crowd of just under 400 spectators in Easton, Pa., the two teams that had combined to win four of the last five PL championships lived up to the hype of being among the top teams in the league.
In the first half, the two teams were able to muster a combined 10 shots on goal, yet none of them were able to find the back of the net, as the game went into halftime scoreless.
To open the second period of play, the Eagles were able to get on the board first when Larry Mark scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season in the 58th minute, slipping the shot by the Leopards goaltender to give AU a 1-0 lead.
However, the lead would be short-lived as Lafayette's Scott Hawkins headed in a corner kick from teammate Thomas Harju in the 74th minute to tie the game up at one.
Although the Eagles would outshoot the Leopards 7-5 in the second half, they were unable to retake the lead.
The two teams would hold their defensive pressure throughout overtime, as only Lafayette was able to get a shot on goal, ending the game in a 1-1 draw.
The key to the low scoring game was the stellar play of the two goaltenders. AU's Chris Sedlak was able to make three saves while his counterpart, senior Scott Backus, stopped six Eagle shots.
With the tie, the Eagles were unable to avenge their loss to the Leopards last season, when they were defeated 1-0 in the PL championship game at Reeves Field.
Winless in their last two games, the Eagles will look to get back on track when they travel out west to Albuquerque, N.M., to compete in the New Mexico Tournament. The action kicks off against the University of New Mexico on Friday at 7 p.m.
