September wrap-up: Eagle sports recapped

Women's soccer

Back-to-back home wins this past weekend over Richmond and Robert Morris helped the AU women's soccer team improve their overall record to 6-3-1. After being held scoreless for three of their four previous games, the Eagles offense came to life scoring five goals in just two games en route to posting 3-0 and 2-1 wins, respectively. The Eagles will look to continue their success this weekend as they travel to Annapolis, Md., on Saturday to take on Navy in their Patriot League season opener.

Men's soccer

The AU men's soccer team enter their match-up with Lehigh on Saturday with aspirations of picking up their first Patriot League victory of the season. American's only other Patriot League match-up in 2006 resulted in a 0-0 tie against Lafayette. Last season it took the Eagles two overtimes to defeat the Mountain Hawks 2-1 on their way to the Patriot League Finals.

Women's field hockey

After suffering a 3-2 defeat to Richmond on Sunday, AU field hockey will look to bounce back this weekend as they travel to Hamilton, N.Y., to take on the Colgate Raiders. Despite defeating James Madison 6-2 on Friday, the loss to Richmond dropped the Eagles' record to 7-3 and snapped the team's seven game winning streak that began back on Aug. 29 against Stanford. In their only match-up last season American dominated Colgate 9-1 on the way to capturing their third consecutive Patriot League Championship.

Volleyball

The AU women's volleyball team had enjoyed a winning first month to the season, amassing a 9-6 overall record. American also jumped out to a 2-0 start in Patriot League play, enjoying consecutive 3-1 road wins over Lehigh and Lafayette last week. The strong start to league play bodes well for AU, who looks to capture a sixth consecutive PL championship title and NCAA tournament appearance this season. The Eagles have a key match-up this weekend when they face familiar foe Army, whom they played in last year's PL championship game, at home on Saturday.

Cross country

The AU men's and women's cross country teams have had a successful 2006 run thus far, with the men winning two of three invitationals in which they've competed. The Eagles will face nationally ranked competition this weekend when they travel to the Bill Dellinger Invite in Oregon on Friday, and regional rivals at the George Mason Invite on Saturday.
