Alcohol Awareness Week targets students nationwide

National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week will take place at 1,000 universities nationwide, including AU, Oct. 19 to 25.

The events at AU will include a guest speaker Wednesday and a mocktail competition, according to Rachel Schwager, a sophomore in the School of Communication and member of Delta Gamma. Mocktails are non-alcoholic drinks that are made with different ingredients, such as juices and soda.

Another event will have some students attend a Training for Intervention Procedures, or TIPS class, which trains waiters and waitresses who serve alcohol how to prevent improper alcohol sales, drunk driving and underage alcohol sales, according to the Pennsylvania Restaurant Association's Web site.

Some students reacted positively to the upcoming week. "I think it's good to provide students with [alcohol] info," said Laura Feldman, a sophomore in the School of Public Affairs and member of Delta Gamma.

"It's a really great week for college campuses to have," Schwager said.

Class of 2009 Week features free food, themed nights

High turnout and free giveaways have marked this year's Class of 2009 Week, according to Class President Andrew Gardner, a sophomore in the School of Communication who is also an assistant features editor at The Eagle.

Last night's "Boardwalk in the Tavern" was the highlight of the week, said Class of 2009 Treasurer Katie Ryan, a student in the School of Public Affairs. The event was co-sponsored by Eagle Nights, Student Government and the Residence Hall Association and featured various carnival-style games and free food, including cotton candy and snow cones.

The class council also gave away free root beer floats on the quad Monday and partnered with the Terrace Dining Room for an Aloha-themed night Tuesday. There will be free pizza on the quad for all students today from noon to 1 p.m.

Gardner said turnout all week has been "surprisingly better than expected ... so far, so good."

The 2009 Council is planning a canned food drive for Thanksgiving and is working with Eco-Sense, RHA and the Physical Plant on a long-term project to overhaul the campus recycling program, Gardner said.
