WCL to work with California law school to train young Chinese lawyers

The Washington College of Law and the University of Pacific McGeorge School of Law are helping China rebuild its legal system, according to a WCL press release.

The U.S. Agency for International Development recently awarded a $1.1 million grant for a program to train junior law professors in China. The money is part of the USAID effort to "democratize China," said Hilary Lopin, project coordinator at the Office of Grants and Programs at WCL.

The program will train junior law professors in "professional skills, such as negotiation, mediation, arbitration and litigation," according to the press release.

"We are pleased to have this opportunity to work together with McGeorge School of Law to train young law professors in China," Claudio Grossman, dean of WCL, said in the press release. "Sharing our institutional expertise in the field of clinical legal education as well as our proud tradition of engaging the community, the nation and the world in legal education is an important part of our mission as a school."

The goal of the program is to "help plant the seeds to encourage better professionalism in China" and lead to "a better rule of law in China over time," Lopin said.

Kogod dean addresses new staff, future of school at annual speech

Richard Durand, dean of the Kogod School of Business, discussed "where Kogod is now and where it will go in the next year" at the annual State of the Kogod address Tuesday, said Clark Gregor, public information officer in the AU Media Relations Office.

Durand said he "invested huge amounts of money into career development" since he began working at AU a year ago, hiring 60 percent more staff in Kogod's career development center. Kogod added seven new staff members this year and is recruiting seven new faculty members for next year, he said.

About 50 students attended the speech. Rob Crowther, a junior in Kogod, said he came to the event because he is interested in the future of the school and its building expansion.
