Jenny Lewis lures audiences with her vocal stylings, creative lyrics and whimsical style. Her sultry voice filled the 9:30 club on Sunday night as fans cheered for her quirky folk music.
The performance included everything expected of a great show, minus the haze of cigarette smoke because the artist requested the club be smoke-free. This sold-out show opened with performances by The Blow and Vietnam.
Jenny Lewis kicked off her "Rabbit Fur Coat" tour with the Watson Twins this fall in Los Angeles, Calif. Lewis, also known as the lead singer of the indie rock band Rilo Kiley, combined talents with the Watson Twins (Chandra and Leigh Watson) for her first solo album, "Rabbit Fur Coat." The Watson Twins also released their debut EP "Southern Manners" around the same time. The tour continues until Dec. 9.
Looking refined in their black dresses, Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins sang to their fans. During "The Charging Sky," Lewis made reference to the "D.C. streets," encouraging the audience to become more involved in the show.
After "Happy," Lewis and the twins exited the stage and the band began a short jam session, while the audience pondered the singers' whereabouts. The guitarist introduced the members of the band, and built the audience up to the re-introduction of Lewis and her backing twins.
Dramatically contrasting their black apparel at the beginning of the show, the women bounced onto stage dressed in gold-sequined dresses. The ladies kicked it up a notch with a new upbeat track, "Sing! Fernando," while the audience clapped their hands with the beat to show their support.
Lewis gave a brief yet memorable introduction to her next song by saying, "We have a new song for you tonight, and it's the reason why you can't leave your door unlocked in America anymore." She rendered beautiful vocal melodies in this a capella song as the twins sang about a relationship with a man that lasted only a week. After the girls musically pieced together the events of the week-long affair, the song ended with the ladies saying goodbye.
They concluded their set for the night with a fade out of "Born Secular." The ladies left first, followed by the members of the band until only the drummer remained on stage. Then he slowly faded out and exited the stage.
The audience cheered until Lewis and the Watson Twins reappeared for an encore. Lewis played the first song she wrote for the album, the title track, "Rabbit Fur Coat." She sang about the powerful idea that "fortune faded as fortunes often do." They played two other songs in the encore and ended the performance with sincere waves to the audience.
