Palestinian Prime Minister unharmed following gunfire attack
Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh was not harmed after unidentified gunmen opened fire on his convoy while traveling through Gaza Friday, according to Reuters.
Officials said they did not believe the attack was an assassination attempt, Reuters reported. Local residents stated the attackers were relatives of an activist of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' faction who was killed earlier in the month by Hamas militants.
Gunfire hit the Hamas-led police force that was behind the car Haniyeh was in. Hamas security officials returned fire, and at least one of their vehicles caught fire, according to Reuters.
The attack is the latest in a series of deadly attacks this month in Israel and Palestine resulting in 19 reported deaths.
Scientists say human-produced chemicals responsible for largest hole in ozone layer
Scientists reported Thursday that a new hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica is the largest hole in the ozone to date, according to The Associated Press.
Scientists say that human-produced gases such as bromine and chlorine are responsible for causing the hole, the AP reported.
Measurements conducted from a NASA satellite observed a reading of 85 Dobson units, the scale used to measure ozone, in October. In July, the same site had a previous measurement of 300 Dobson units.
"From September 21 to 30, the average area of the ozone hole was the largest ever observed, at 10.6 million square miles," Paul Newman, atmospheric scientist at Godson Space Center in Maryland, told the AP.
Ozone, a form of oxygen in the upper layer of the atmosphere, is responsible for blocking the sun's ultraviolet rays, leading many to worry about the long-term impacts of the hole, the AP reported.
