North Korea says U.S.-led sanctions are war declaration

North Korea said it considers U.S.-led sanctions following last week's test launch of its first nuclear weapon a declaration of war, the Associated Press reported Tuesday.

North Korea released a statement Tuesday saying "the [sanctions] resolution cannot be construed otherwise than a declaration of a war," the AP reported.

According to the AP, North Korea made no public statement concerning the U.S. appeal to the U.N. to apply sanctions until Tuesday. The proposed sanctions include banning the sale of military and luxury goods and the inspection of all cargo coming in and out of North Korea.

Since the U.S. proposed sanctions following the Oct. 9 test, Japan and South Korea have pledged to help the United States implement sanctions. However, they advocate sanction terms that include increased dialogue to avoid a second nuclear missile test.

FDA approves Type 2 diabetes medication for blood sugar control

The Food and Drug Administration approved Merck and Co. Inc.'s Januvia pill Tuesday, which reportedly helps those with Type 2 diabetes control their blood sugar levels, according to The Associated Press.

Clinical trials showed the pill helped enhance the pancreas' ability to produce insulin while also signaling the liver to stop producing glucose, according to the AP. The pill works as well as older drugs and has fewer side effects and does not cause the weight gain previous treatments did.

Merck will sell the once-a-day drug for $4.86 per pill, which may limit its use because many other diabetes drugs cost less than 50 cents per pill, according to the AP.

Approximately 20 million Americans suffer from Type 2 diabetes, according to the AP.
