Sexual Health Education Not Lacking at AU
I am a loyal reader of The Eagle and respect the publication for its reporting and stories. Reading Andrea Chong's story about AU's sexual health education program made me want to write a response to the criticism.
As a Naked Truth Wellness Advocate for the past three years and a Resident Assistant for two years, I would have to disagree with JoAnna Smith's assessments of AU's sexual health programs. Not only does The Naked Truth offer a valuable service to this school in relation to sexual health and other topics, it is one of the best student-run organizations out there in comparison to other schools. I have had countless students come to me and say how much they appreciate our programs and our monthly "Toilet Paper" publication. Students appreciate what we do and to say that we're not doing enough is inaccurate. Why Ms. Chong didn't contact someone affiliated with my organization instead of Ms. Smith, who really has no basis for her comments, is beyond me.
Also, in response to AU just now getting condom machines, I have to inform readers that the Wellness Center has been selling and giving away free condoms for years. Why students don't take advantage of that, I have no idea. You cannot fault the organization if students aren't taking advantage of the services we offer.
