D.C. Police Chief Charles Ramsey will resign when Mayor-Elect Adrian Fenty is sworn in Jan. 3, according to The Washington Post.
Ramsey, who was hired by Mayor Anthony Williams eight years ago, sparred with Fenty on a number of issues, including police deployment, according to The Post. Fenty remained publicly non-committal about Ramsey's fate as police chief but suggested that Ramsey's Metropolitan Police Department would be more effective under a "hands-on mayor."
When Ramsey took over the position, the MPD was recovering from scandals that plagued former Police Chief Larry Soulsby's tenure and instituted annual training to combat the high number of civilian shootings District police officers were committing at the time.
Ramsey was also criticized after officers barred protesters at a 2002 anti-globalization rally from leaving a protest in Pershing Park and then arrested them without giving proper warning, according to The Post.
An official announcement of Ramsey's intentions could come as early as this week, according to The Post.
