National brief: Evangelical leader resigns from posts amid gay sex scandal

The president of the National Association of Evangelicals resigned Thursday after a male escort alleged that he and the former president engaged in a sexual affair, according to The Washington Post.

The escort, Mike Jones, revealed in radio and television interviews that the Rev. Ted Haggard, who also resigned as head pastor of the 14,000-member New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Colo., engaged in a sexual relationship with him for three years. Jones said Haggard paid him about $200 for every sexual encounter during Haggard's monthly trips to Denver. He also said Haggard used methamphetamine "every time he visited me."

Haggard said Friday that he bought methamphetamine from Jones, but never used it. He denied Jones' claim that the two had sex, but did admit to paying the escort for a massage after a Denver hotel referred him to Jones.
