National brief: Girl lights mother's bed on fire in faked abduction attempt

A 12-year-old girl in Miami County, Ind., reportedly attempted to fake her own abduction by setting her mother's bed on fire and driving away with two younger siblings in the family's car, according to the Associated Press.

Police said the girl was sick of doing chores, according to the AP.

"Apparently the mom had given her a lot of duties," said Miami County Sheriff Ken Roland. "It was too much for a 12-year-old, and she snapped."

When the mother woke to find her bed on fire and her children and car missing, she contacted authorities. Police called the woman's cell phone and spoke with the 12-year old. She told police that she and her siblings had been abducted, and that the abductors had forced her to drive the car. The girl reportedly claimed her abductors were following behind in another car, according to the AP.

Once police managed to get the girl to stop the car in Peru, a town 70 miles north of Indianapolis, they determined that the girl had not been abducted, according to the AP.

Although there were no injuries, police were holding the girl in a juvenile detention center on charges of arson and attempted murder, according to the AP.
