The penny drive, run through the Friends of the AU Library, that began Oct. 1 is off to a slow start. It has raised $29.42 of the $10,560 goal for the end of the semester. The campaign might be hampered by a lack of publicity, as some students say they haven't even heard of it. Quarter sheets in residence hall mailboxes and a healthy postering campaign might help.
The campaign may also be suffering from student apathy about the state of the library. Everyone complains about the library, but now that the opportunity is here, no one actually wants to do something about it. Put your money where your mouth is and take a few minutes to drop your pennies - or nickels, dimes, quarters and paper bills - in the collection jars (located in the Admissions Welcome Center, Mary Graydon Center and at the circulation and reserves desks in the library). What does anyone really do with pennies, anyway? You can't even put them on a Metro farecard.
Just think: If every undergraduate student gave just $1, the library would have about $6,000 more to work with. And that's definitely not something to complain about.
