Swartz named new chief tech officer

David G. Swartz was recently named the new chief information technology officer at AU, according to an AU press release.

Swartz, who will fill this previously vacant position, will begin work Jan. 3. He previously worked at George Washington University, where he was vice president and chief information officer.

"I am looking forward to working directly with Dave to build upon the university's successful technology innovations and to create and implement new technology in support of the academic mission and administration challenges of the future," said Don Myers, vice president for finance and treasurer, in a statement on the Office of Information Technology's Web site.

The OIT, which Swartz will head, is "comprised of the university's enterprise systems and technology operations," Myers said in the online statement.

Before working at GWU, Swartz held similar positions at West Virginia University, the University of Oklahoma and the University of Maryland, according to the press release.

New dean of academic affairs chosen

The dean of academic affairs position was recently filled by Haig Mardirosian, who has acted in the position since November 2005, according to an AU press release.

Mardirosian, professor of music, will serve in his new official position beginning Jan. 1 and will continue as director of the general education program, according to the press release. He has previously served as associate dean of academic affairs.

Mardirosian has been a faculty member at AU for over 30 years and was a good pick for the position, said interim Provost Ivy Broder in the press release.

"During the interview process, he demonstrated a deep understanding of the managerial scope and the full range of issues confronting the dean of academic affairs," Broder said. "Dr. Mardirosian is an individual with a deep and long standing commitment to this institution, and I am pleased that he is willing to accept this appointment. I am confident that he will continue to provide outstanding academic leadership"
