The George Washington University board of trustees chose Steven Knapp, the provost at Johns Hopkins University, as the institution's new president, according to The Washington Post.
Knapp, 55, will replace outgoing President Stephen Trachtenberg, 68, on Aug. 1, according to The Post.
The board began its search after Trachtenberg announced in April that he was stepping down. Trachtenberg, who has been president at GW since 1988, was credited with raising the university's status to a national level during his tenure, according to The Post.
W. Russell Ramsey, vice chair of the board of trustees and head of the university's presidential search committee, said the committee had been looking for someone who would continue to boost the university's stature.
"He's just got the right stuff," he said. "We're really, really excited."
Knapp said he would continue to transform GW into a top research university by linking it to the District's museums, libraries and governmental institutions.
"It's extremely exciting and a great opportunity," he said.
