I much enjoyed Benjamin Lozovsky's articulate review of Jan. 19's Blackalicous Tavern show, aside from the accusatory comment: "Despite the near criminal lack of publicity surrounding the free campus event."
As the assistant director of the Student Union Board, I can assure you that promotional measures preceded the day of show to an appropriate degree considering the show was free of charge. The my.american.edu portal not only carried a front-page flyer advertising the show, but a fleet of e-mails was sent to each and every student's inbox. In addition, each dorm and the majority of other buildings on campus were equipped with Blackalicious flyers, often three to a board. Furthermore, Blackalicious advertised the show themselves on their official Web site. I can attest to this as I received a slew of calls from non-AU students who asked permission, in vain, to attend the show.
It seems to me that this amount of promotion was more than satisfactory for a free show in the Tavern, and it turned out to be as more than 400 students came out for the show.
If anyone reading this feels that the lack of promotion for concerts this year can be rectified by a new and creative advertising method that I am still ignorant of, I encourage them to stop by the SUB office (MGC 268) or call me at (202) 885-6408.
