Senate Republican to keynote WCL Conference on International Migration

Senator Richard Burr, R-N.C., will keynote a Washington College of Law conference focusing on the legal aspects of international migration, according to a WCL press release.

The conference, titled "A World on the Move: Legal Perspectives on a New Era of International Migration," will take place Feb. 15. In addition to Burr, the conference will feature panelists from the Department of Justice, the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants and the Inter-American Development Bank, according to the press release.

Burr was elected in the Republican sweep of Congress in 1994, according to The Washington Post.

According to News and Observer, a North Carolina-based media outlet, Burr has gone on record favoring President Bush's strict approach to illegal immigration.

"Like many states, North Carolina has a growing immigrant population," Burr told the Winston-Salem Journal. "How did the administration factor that into its goals?"

SG rejects creation of NCOR committee

The Undergraduate Senate rejected a bill to establish a committee to obtain information about the National Conference on Organized Resistance on Sunday.

The point of the committee would have been to get a complete picture of the situation, not to formulate an opinion on NCOR, Peter Wahlberg, a sophomore in the College of Arts and Sciences, said.

Many senators said they felt the NCOR issue is no longer pertinent enough to explore.

In compliance with the Open Government Bill, all bills and minutes from the Undergraduate Senate are now on the SG Web site for students to look through.

SG President Ashley Mushnick also informed the Senate of the university's plans to unveil a new Web site.

"[It is] a very expensive, yet well-worth-it venture ... an interesting project to keep an eye on," she said.

Mushnick, speaking of the university's budget, said there may be a 6 percent increase in tuition "that will be met with, hopefully, a 6 percent increase in financial aid as well."

"The top priorities for the budget include the Web site, the financial health of the institution and improvements to the library," Mushnick said.
