Metro brief: Four students charged in Wilson High gym fight

Four students are facing charges after a gym teacher was injured in a fight at Tenleytown's Woodrow Wilson Senior High School Thursday, according to The Washington Post.

Approximately 15 people were involved in the fight, which happened during a lunchtime basketball game in the school's gym. The fight began after the gym teacher, who has not been publicly identified, made a call against an 18-year-old student participating in the game. The student refused to accept the call and began "attacking and insulting the instructor," according to The Post.

A second student then joined in the fight and several others followed suit. The teacher eventually escaped and briefly barricaded himself in an office before walking out into another hallway. Several of the students then began attacking him again. Two other gym teachers stepped in and restrained the students.

The 18-year-old was charged with assault and aggravated assault. Three 16-year-old students, charged as juveniles, faced the same set of charges, according to The Post.

A D.C. police official said the teacher had received cuts around his stomach and side, according to The Post.

"It was an unfortunate lunchtime incident," John C. White, a spokesman for D.C. Public Schools, said.
