The search for a job or internship during college is often a stressful and difficult time for students. However, the new e-newsletter careers.COMM may alleviate some worries for students in the School of Communication.
Lenore Webb, the SOC career adviser in the Career Center, started the e-newsletter in October 2006. Webb said other schools at the university had started their own e-newsletters but no one had ever done one for the SOC.
Webb wanted to create careers.COMM to inform students of possible internships, jobs, events and scholarships. For AU students, the search to find internships and jobs can be overwhelming because of the vast opportunities that are offered in the District area, Webb said.
"Having a regular publication would be helpful and keep us in better contact with the students and faculty," she said.
Webb sends out careers.COMM biweekly to make sure she can get all the new and significant jobs, internships and scholarships in the newsletter. Each issue contains an abundance of material ranging from upcoming events to detailed job and internship leads. Students are able to see criteria, deadlines and contact information.
Webb said it is important for students in their junior and senior years to get internships so they can make sure they are prepared to enter the workforce. By receiving careers.COMM, she said students are better able to find an internship that best suits them.
Jessica Leeser, a sophomore in SOC, said she reads the newsletter regularly.
"It's really helpful and informative," she said.
Leeser said she is doing a communication-related program this summer because of careers.COMM.
"I would not have known about it if it weren't for this resource," she said.
Webb said a lot of the information in the e-newsletters can be found online but students are often unaware of how to find it.
"Most of it is stuff students could get on the Web ... if they looked hard enough," she said.
Webb said she hopes careers.COMM will make the job and internship search "easier for students." It is supposed to be a helpful reminder for students and faculty about all that is available, she said.
Webb said she encourages professors just as much as she encourages students to read the e-newsletter. She said if professors read it they could pass along the information that is relevant to their class.
Chris Palmer, director of the Center for Environmental Filmmaking, said careers.COMM is "an extremely useful document." He said it was "critically important" for students to read because it has so much information.
Leeser said if more students took the time to read it, it would "help them get involved outside the classroom"
