Wrestling captures four individual crowns at EIWA Championships

Six American University wrestlers placed in the EIWA championships on Saturday in East Stroudsburg, Pa. with four of the six earning spots to compete the NCAA tournament starting March 15 in Asburn Hills, MI.

Redshirt junior Josh Glenn won the tournament in the 197-weight class for the second consecutive year, defeating No. 3 Jerry Rinaldi of Cornell to finish the season with a 22-1 record.

"There is no doubt in my mind that he's the top 197 pound wrestler in the country" AU head coach Mark Cody said.

Glenn won the championship match Saturday night with a 5-1 decision and is predicted to go into the NCAA tournament as the first or second seed.

Redshirt freshman Mike Cannon also fought his way into the final bout in the 165-weight class on Saturday night. Cannon lost to Cornell junior Steve Anceravage with score of 9-6.

With the EIWA loss, Cannon finishes his season with a 27-6 record and is going into the NCAA tournament as the 12 seed. Cody expects Cannon to "get on the podium" at the national tournament.

Freshman Kyle Borshoff (141) and sophomore Rudy Rueda (171) also earned spots in the NCAA tournament. Borshoff, coming off ankle sprains that put him out for much of the season, earned his spot with a fourth-place finish in the EIWA tournament. Rueda earned his trip to the NCAA tournament through a fifth-place finish.

Redshirt freshman Jasen Borshosff (125) placed 6th and Damian Swietlik placed 5th, but neither scored high enough to get the wild card spot at the NCAA tournament.

As a team, the Eagles tied Harvard with 71 points in the tournament to place ahead of Rutgers, Army and Bucknell. Cornell won the tournament with 125.5 points, with Navy placing second and UPenn in third. The Eagles finished sixth as a team, which ties a school-record for best finish in the conference tournament.

The six wrestlers going to the national tournament will have two weeks to prepare to compete in the 77th annual NCAA Division I Championships.
