Former Pakistani prime minister deported

Pakistani authorities deported former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif Monday, four hours after he returned from exile vowing to end President Pervez Musharraf's rule.

The action may lead to another confrontation between Musharraf and the Pakistani Supreme Court as Sharif's lawyers challenged his petition to the judiciary Tuesday, The Associated Press reported.

Sharif, who served two terms as prime minister in the 1990s, was toppled in a military coup in 1999 and agreed to stay away from Pakistani politics for 10 years or face a life sentence in Pakistan, according to The Washington Post.

Last month, the court ruled Sharif had an "inalienable right" to return from exile and authorities could not prevent him, according to The Associated Press.

Thousands of supporters attempted to greet Sharif at the airport Monday but were met with arrests, roadblocks and the jamming of cell phone signals, the Post reported.
