President Bush made an unexpected visit to Iraq Monday and said the number of U.S. troops may be reduced if security continually improves, The Associated Press reported.
Bush and his war cabinet, including Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, met with U.S. Commander in Iraq, Gen. George Petraeus, Ambassador Ryan Crocker and Iraqi politicians including Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki at a military base in Anbar province, west of Baghdad, for over eight hours, according to the AP.
Bush did not say how many troops may be withdrawn or whether it will happen before next spring when the first of the additional 30,000 troops he sent to Iraq this year are to come home, the AP reported.
Petraeus and Crocker are to testify in front of Congress next week about the war's progress, according to the AP.
