The construction of four new towers where the World Trade Center once stood forced the annual Sept. 11 commemoration ceremony to be held at a nearby park for the first time Tuesday, The Associated Press reported.
"Just so long as we continue to do something special every year, so you don't wake up and say, 'Oh it's 9/11'," Kathleen Mullen, whose niece died in the attacks, told The Associated Press.
Elected officials also reacted to the anniversary of the attacks.
"That day we felt isolated, but not for long and not from each other," New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said, according to the AP.
However, amid the ceremonies, a new video from Osama bin Laden in which he called for followers to join a "caravan of martyrs," the AP reported.
