Vacancy challenges SG unity

At the height of his campaign for Student Government secretary, Alex Manzanares was the candidate to beat. The only student to submit a platform to The Eagle, Manzanares promised to facilitate communication between the SG and the student body, to compile data about SG projects and to ensure more transparency in SG functions. As such, The Eagle strongly recommended him for the job in its annual endorsement editorial.

Imagine our disappointment when we learned that Manzanares would be resigning. Even amid criticism of Manzanares' conduct, SG President Joe Vidulich had only positive things to say about the former secretary's excellent work ethic and charismatic personality. So what had gone wrong?

According to Manzanares' letter, shown right, SG exclusiveness was to blame. The former secretary said he felt like an outsider, that the close-knit nature of the "Vidulich administration" prohibited him from making a difference and doing his job. Yet, other SG execs fired back at Manzanares, faulting him for his inability to take criticism, his ineffectiveness at communicating with the university and his shortcomings in overseeing the AUSG Welcome Week magazine.

In actuality, we don't know the full story. We cannot discount any of the claims made by either Vidulich or Manzanares. The most we at The Eagle can do is hope that the SG will act expediently and efficiently when filling the vacancy. Choosing a replacement for Manzanares without first consulting the student body would mar this year's SG and its promise of increased accountability. Vidulich should appoint an interim secretary while the SG plans an election to be held by the semester's end.

In the end, regardless of whom Vidulich appoints as secretary, we look forward to a more cooperative and diverse Student Government. Resignations of any form do little for the students - SG execs are elected to serve, and they should not forget that.

To the Student Body, AU Administration and Colleagues:

When I decided to run for the position of Secretary not so long ago, I believed in the power of Student Government creating change. But now that belief ceases to exist. My role as Secretary has been micromanaged from the moment I was elected. The Student Government claims to be a team working together for a common goal - to improve the quality of life for students. However, what I have seen is much different, most of it petty. Many would argue that my colleagues are a great representation of this student body. However, I do not remember the call to service being self - service. The Student Government is not about me nor of those elected, it is about the students. Unfortunately, my colleagues have lost sight of that - a mission promised to uphold once taking oath of office. It is unfortunate that they have wasted many hours this summer, in behind the scenes discussions, trying to have me dismissed from my position. Luckily, I will save everyone the time and resign my position immediately. I am deeply disheartened by this decision, but I have no choice. I can no longer be part of what is now a glorified club instead of an advocacy body for students. I truly have enjoyed being Secretary of Student Government. However, it is their actions that have created an environment in which only a select few are allowed to enter. I was and still am an SG outsider. The Vidulich Administration in its' current state thrives on drama, nepotism, and being best of friends with the American University Administration. I for one do not have the time nor desire to constantly deal with the petty drama nor wasting time when instead we need to be advocating for the needs of those that matter most. I would be inclined to make a recommendation to my successor, however that position will be appointed by the Vidulich administration and will be another pawn. I want to thank those who have supported me for Secretary as it has been an honor to serve my school and the students that attend here. I hope that my resignation sparks a change for a more diverse Student Government - one that truly is more professional and is a true advocate for students.

Cheers,

Alex Manzanares
