Red flags on quad mark Alcohol Awareness Week

AU marked National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week last week through various on-campus activities, according to the Student Government Web site.

AU sponsored 10 events related to alcohol awareness, including AU alumnus Ross Szabo's presentation on how alcohol use affects mental health. The National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week Committee also put up red flags on the quad Thursday, each of which represented 10 of the 1,700 college-age people who die from alcohol-related injuries each year, according to the SG Web site.

Every year, colleges struggle with students who may die or be injured due to alcohol use, said Sara Waldron, associate dean of students.

"It brings awareness not so much to our policies on campus, but for students on [the issue of] alcohol and the choices they make that may affect them socially, physically, emotionally and academically," she said. "It's helping to educate students to help them make the most informed choices about their use of alcohol."

Sponsors of the week's events included the National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week Committee, AU Athletes, Student Government, the Wellness Center, the Student Health Center and others, according to the SG Web site.
