Impoverished Colombian man wears iron mask in protest

A Colombian artisan sewed his mouth shut, put on an iron mask and bound himself in chains last week in protest after he and his family were refused entry into their apartment by their landlord last month, according to Caracol Radio, a Colombian news station.

Luis Miguel Aldana made the decision to sew his mouth shut and wear an iron mask after finding himself unable to improve his situation while staying at his friend's house, Caracol Radio reported.

"The owner of the house in an abusive manner took it by means of grates, chains and padlocks ... persecuting us in such a way as to lock up the few artisan works, operation materials, school supplies, my children's clothes," Aldana wrote in a letter, according to Caracol Radio.

Aldana told The Associated Press he was evicted for not paying his landlord two months' rent because he had to buy shoes for his three children.

Aldana is being monitored by the District Health Department and is receiving treatment to prevent dehydration, Caracol Radio reported.
