Students admit to posting satirical fliers at gw

Seven students have taken responsibility for fliers posted on the campus of George Washington University early Monday morning, The Hatchet, GW's student newspaper, reported.

The flier's headline read, "Hate Muslims? So Do We," followed by a picture of a man in long robes and stated the typical Muslim has "hatred for women," "a suicide vest" and "a peg-leg for smuggling children and heroin," according to a copy of the poster posted on The Hatchet's Web site.

The students hung the posters as satire in response to Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week that will be held at college campuses nationwide, including at GW, the week of Oct. 22 and feature several speakers discussing radical Islam, The Hatchet reported.

"While the poster, even if taken seriously, was not intended to cause any real harm, the systematic and glorified type of racism represented by this event is being imposed upon us from dangerous divisive outside forces," the students said in an e-mail to The Hatchet.

University police are still investigating the event, according to The Hatchet.
