Stay stylish: Sweats make a statement, too

It's the middle of October, it's getting a little colder and you're starting to find it harder and harder to roll out of bed before classes. To add to your morning woes, you realize you've worn out quite a few of those adorable ensembles you bought before school started and are left with only a pair of sweats to throw on.

Yes, it's tiring to wake up and resist the urge to throw on whatever happens to be on your floor, but we're going to make it easy for you. We've compiled the best ways to wear sweats stylishly, the best sweats to wear and the easiest ways to be comfortable without looking like a slob.

First, the basics: To wear sweats without looking sloppy, at least one article of clothing should be formfitting. For example, if you want to wear a baggy zip-up, you'll want to wear close-fitting Hard Tail sweatpants underneath. If you want to wear baggy sweatpants, pair them with a cute thermal top.

Another simple way to make your sweats look stylish is with cute accessories such as ballet flats, a headband or dangling earrings. Try to match your sweats with your other articles of clothing. For example, if your sweats have a little red rose embroidery on them, try to pair it with a white or black shirt with a hint of red on it. Black Hard Tail pants are also easy to match with practically any sweats, unless they are a deep navy blue.

However, there are particular sweatpants that will make anyone look like a slob, guaranteed. The most common sweatpants faux pas are as follows: first, those sweatpants for which you need to pull the drawstrings repeatedly to get them to stay on your waist are too big and a clear assurance that you will look sloppy. Secondly, your boyfriend's sweatshirt that comes to your knees is only OK to sleep in, but it should never leave your room. It's just not cute. Lastly, you should avoid monochromatic sweats - if you are wearing navy blue bottoms, don't wear the same-colored sweatshirt with them. If your sweats are red, a red zip up is definitely off-limits. Remember, those Juicy sets are best worn separately - no matter how cool it was to match that well in seventh grade.

Just because your sweats are comfortable doesn't mean they have to look sloppy. Our No. 1 recommendation for sweatpant couture is the original and fashionable 2BFree sweat suits. These sweatsuits - many of which are emblazoned with the easily recognizable fleur-de-lys -are easily paired together and sold online and at stores like Kitson and Bloomingdale's (which just opened in Friendship Heights). The sweats are splashed with colorful graffiti-style prints and embroidery and come in an array of bright colors. Other stylish sweats include the classic Juicy Couture velour sweatpant, Lacoste's Vintage Pique track pants and Public Fusion's Voile sweats. For a less expensive, always comfortable, school-spirited option, look no further than the AU campus bookstore. The bookstore has some easy-to-match cropped sweats with an Eagles logo on the back available in white and navy blue.

Stay Stylish,
