Women's soccer prevails in both weekend games, starts 3-game streak

The women's soccer team won both games this weekend with its high-powered offense, defeating Lehigh 2-1 on Friday and crushing Lafayette 5-0 on Sunday.

In the first 15 minutes of Sunday's game, Eagle Kelly McLaughlin connected with Siobhan Gillan for two spectacular goals. On both plays, Gillan volleyed the ball off her head and into the back of the net.

American's defense took control of the half and denied Lehigh any opportunity on goal they could muster.

Lehigh made a run in the second half, when Lehigh defender Michaela Pawlewicz assisted forward Liz Carlos, but with the help of AU goalie Kelsey Wiggins and defender Olivia Heditsian, Lehigh's attack ended quickly. For the last 30 minutes of the game, the Eagles never let their guard down.

Two days later, the Eagles were back in Pennsylvania, this time at Lafayette College. They were ready to continue their winning streak.

When the game began, it was clear from their swift, clean play and several shots on goal that the Eagles were playing with confidence.

The Eagles quickly pounced on the ball, scoring two goals within the first 12 minutes of the game. Midfielder Kelsey Brasher and defender Friederike Engel gave the Eagles an early 2-0 lead with their powerful shots on goal. The offense did not let off the pressure throughout the game.

In the first 10 minutes of the second half, the Eagles found the back of the net again. Midfielder Erin Stebbins scored first, followed by Brasher's second goal of the game two minutes later. Forward Krystn Hodge assisted both goals.

There was no stopping the Eagles. They outshot Lafayette an astounding 11-3. The final goal of the game came with only two minutes remaining, when Hodge was on the receiving end of an assist by Linsey Sledge.

The Eagles left Pennsylvania with a 3-0 record in the Patriot League and a 9-5 overall record. The team looks to continue its winning streak when it battles Navy on home turf Sunday.
