AU received a Grand Award last week in the Urban University Grounds category for exceptional grounds maintenance in the Professional Grounds Management Society's 2007 Green Star Awards competition.
The Green Star Awards program acknowledges grounds with a high degree of excellence in terms of landscape design and construction.
AU is a hidden gem in D.C., according to Eric Grammer, the society's communications manager.
"Most award programs, if not all, in the green industry honor the instillation of landscapes," he said. "There is really nothing that recognizes the maintenance, and that is what our award does - it recognizes the people behind these beautiful spaces," he said.
In total, the society gave out 19 Grand Awards. The society also gave out 20 Honor Awards in 14 different areas of competition.
The society gave its awards to locations ranging from apartment complexes to parks to cemeteries.
