On Wednesday, Oct. 31, columnist Dorian Key ("Econ-Sense") submitted a column. During the editing process, it became clear that much of the content in Key's column was lifted directly from an Economist article without adequate attribution. After a further investigation, it became apparent that portions of one other column, "Wall street 'recession' threatens new grads," contained a few unattributed phrases that originally appeared in The New York Times.
The Eagle summarily dismissed Key for plagiarism and removed all of his content from our Web site. Key later admitted and apologized for plagiarizing the Economist article but claimed the "Wall Street" article was the result of a few simple errors.
Key's conduct is unacceptable by all standards of journalism, and plagiarism is an ethical violation this newspaper does not tolerate. The Eagle apologizes for Key's conduct and pledges to continue to strive for perfection and excellence when serving the AU community.
