Letter to the editor: Partisanship does women's issues little justice

Women's Initiative, a non-partisan department of the Student Government, is encouraged to see so many clubs on campus addressing the many and diverse needs of college women as discussed in the Oct. 29 article, "Republican women's club formed."

We were, however, dismayed to see that some clubs have divided campus into those that support "conservative" women's issues and those that support "liberal" women's issues. The movement to ensure women's equality can best be served by uniting on the many issues that all women have in common, such as ending violence against women, preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS and other STIs and achieving gender parity in national politics and the workplace.

WI encourages women to seek out partnerships across political lines to better women's lives at AU and around our country, and we look forward to working with these and other clubs to achieve this goal.

Vanessa C. Mueller Director, Women's Initiative
