Senate passes bill endorsing creation of women's center
The Undergraduate Senate Sunday passed a bill endorsing the creation of a Women's Resource Center during its last meeting of the semester Sunday.
The bill, which passed 21-2-3, requires SG President Joe Vidulich to lobby the administration in support of a proposal by Women's Initiative Director Vanessa Mueller to create the center. Senators Charlie Biscotto and John Barron Weyerhaeuser co-sponsored the bill.
Most schools already have an established women's resource center.
"Right now, we're asking a student-run group to deal with things that no other campus would expect students to deal with," Biscotto said.
The proposal calls for a gradual shift of related responsibilities from Women's Initiative to the university-run Women's Resource Center over a seven-year period. The senate elected Scott Hansen as the new director of the Student Advocacy Center by a vote of 24-0-1. Previous SAC Director Rick Edwards resigned for personal reasons, according to Vidulich.
The senate will hold its next meeting at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20.
