BRIGHT NOW - Invest in a cute mini clutch purse in any colorful shade of your choice in order to stand out from the crowd and stay in style this season. Clutch purses are convenient for their small size and also fashionable for their subtlety.

Eight fabulous trends for a brighter 2008

Whether it's to eat healthier (less Tavern, more salad bar), venturing off the red line of the Metro or seeing more of the things D.C. offers, we try our best to stick to our New Year's resolutions. As for us, we want to keep everyone on campus looking fashionably fabulous for 2008. We'll make it easier for you by giving you the eight most versatile trends for 2008.

1. Shine on

"Shine on" has a new meaning for 2008. The shiniest looks have often been reserved for evening wear, but now you can wear them all the time. This season, you'll find it easy to shine with patent leather shoes, belts, bags and boots during the day, and sequins and sparkles at night.

2. Oversized clutches

Forget shoulder bags and oversized totes. This season, big and bold clutches serve as complements to every outfit. A clutch is an instant way to make any outfit stand out and is best worn when it has a bright color or metallic shade. Be sure to invest in one you really love because this trend has proven its ability to stay in style.

3. See-through clothes

Calm down, we aren't suggesting you wear nothing underneath. We mean layering with chiffon and organza blouses, scarves and shirts. Transparency is also trickling into accessories, as in bags and shoes. A must-have is the transparent raincoat - everyone will see your outfit without getting it wet.

4. Fashion sneakers

Say goodbye to your Nikes and Adidas. Designers such as Michael Kors, Lacoste and Ralph Lauren are launching their own sneaker lines. Michael Kors, for example, has designed a faux python metallic sneaker, retailing for $109. Fashion sneakers are appropriate for day or night - they can be worn casually to class or out with a suit and tie.

5. Floral dresses

We used to only wear floral dresses when our mothers forced us into them. But you'll be happy to hear (or maybe not so happy) that you can now wear those dresses willingly. Floral prints are all over the runways. Also, tie in to the bright-color theme that will be prevalent throughout 2008. Don't wait until spring to break out this fashion trend - we will all need a little reminder of warm weather come February and March.

6. Thin belts

This season, skinny belts are being worn with everything: pantsuits, dresses, even evening wear. Try to follow this simple rule: If your outfit is made of primarily neutral colors, try a bright belt. If your outfit is bright, try a neutral belt color. A silver or gold belt will look good for both kinds of outfits.

7. Estate accessories

Following in the footsteps of the "new luxe" look, which has graced the runway over the past year, estate accessories are starting to make a huge comeback. In place of the understated cocktail ring, emphasis will be more on the big rocks, dangly earrings and big bracelets. For men, designers like Kenneth Cole and Burberry are coming out with their own lines of pocket watches.

8. Blinding bright colors

Neon yellow, bright blue, peacock green and our personal favorite, hot pink, are all in this season. There's a reason why: These colors are instant head-turners. Common among designers such as Christian Lacroix is a vibrant gypsy theme. With headscarves, tiered skirts and flats in vivacious shades of green, blue and yellow, there are many opportunities to experiment. Bring out your sunglasses - you're going to need them.
