Women's basketball soars past Navy, 59-52

The women's basketball team captured a 59-52 win during their game against Navy Wednesday night, pushing their Patriot League record to 3-3.

It didn't look to be in the Eagles' favor early into the game when Navy earned a 10-0 run. Although AU had much catching up to do, juniors Pam Stanfield and Talicia Jackson scored the first 12 points of the game for the Eagles, cutting the Navy lead to 18-12.

The AU women began to pick up the intensity and show the Midshipmen that it was going to be a fight to win. The Eagles used the line to increase the difference, scoring seven straight points from the charity stripe.

A three-point play for the Eagles was finished by senior Stephanie N'Garsanet along with a jumper on the ensuing possession hit by freshman Michelle Kirk to tie the game at 24.

With only a minute left in the half, Ohemaa Nyanin earned the Eagles their first lead of the game. However, as the buzzer began to sound, Navy earned a one-point lead to make it 26-25.

Well into the second half with the score remaining close between both teams, it was anyone's game. The intensity was passed to N'Garsanet as she gave the Eagles six consecutive points, pulling the AU lead to 41-34 with only 11 minutes left in the game.

Navy was unyielding as they pulled within three points of the lead with only six minutes left on the clock. Senior Liz Hayes extended the lead to 49-40 after connecting her first shots of the night, both from outside the arc. The Eagles earned the victory despite the Midshipmen's attempt to close the gap.

Stanfield led the team scoring with a career-high 16 points, while N'Garsanet scored a team-high eight rebounds and a total of 18 points.

AU will host Lafayette this Saturday for Phil Bender at 2 p.m.
