Vidulich vetoes election reform bill

The Undergraduate Senate upheld a veto of the election reform bill and passed a resolution sending condolences over the shooting at Northern Illinois University during their meeting yesterday.

Student Government President Joe Vidulich vetoed "A Bill to Ensure the Credibility of Election Bill," which the senate passed last week. The bill allowed for the senate to review the election results and to nullify the results with a three-quarters vote.

The senate unanimously upheld the veto and agreed to consider "A Bill to Amend the Election Protocol" as a substitute for the vetoed bill at their next meeting.

This new bill allows for a transition time between the presentation of the elections to the senate and the swearing in of new officers, said Julie Mills, the class of 2010 senator who sponsored the new bill.

The senate passed "A Resolution to Extend Condolences to the Northern Illinois University Community" in response to the incident, in which a gunman shot and killed five students and wounded 18 Thursday.

Vidulich said he will send a letter on behalf of the student body to the Northern Illinois University community saying they are in "our thoughts and prayers."

The senate confirmed Jillian Rubino and Tage Danielson as senators for the Class of 2009 and Joel Croft as deputy director of the Student Advocacy Center.

The senate also discussed the SG elections, which are scheduled to occur March 4 and 5. Twelve students attended the informational meeting Saturday. Additional information sessions will take place this Tuesday and Thursday at 10 p.m. in MGC 200, Vidulich said.

The next Undergraduate Senate meeting will take place next Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in the Kogod School of Business building, room 118.
