Stay Stylish: The heart of Valentine's Day: Yellow is the new pink

Heels no-go for daytime festivities

Valentine's Day is around the corner, and it can cause a little bit of stress for anyone. Whether you're going out with your long-term boyfriend or girlfriend, new crush or favorite group of friends, you obviously need something to wear.

Women, if you are going on that perfect date that every girl dreams about, go for the little black dress. Make sure it is not the same dress you wear to Dupont Circle on the weekends. You want to look feminine and cute, but not trampy.

Accessorize with red or pink shoes and jewelry and you will be dressed perfectly for the occasion. Avoid carrying large bags when dressing up. They will take away from your outfit, and you will look like a hobo. Instead, carry a classic clutch that matches your dress. Satin or leather clutches are perfect.

If your date is during the day, go for a more casual outfit. Jeans with a flirty camisole is perfect. Top it off with a red pashmina, and you will be dressed for the holiday. Just a little hint: A daytime date is not the time for heels. Stick to a cute pair of flats to make your outfit complete.

Most people think that pink and red are a must on Valentine's Day, but that's not completely true. Wear any color you feel comfortable in. We know that red is just not the color for everyone. The new color of spring is yellow-apparently, it is the new pink-so try mixing yellows and dark reds for a bold and bright look.

As to the color of one's dress, jewel tones like ruby, emerald and sapphire are in this season. Blacks and other neutrals like silver and gold are also a good choice. For men, your dates won't expect you to pick them up in a three-piece suit. If you do this, you will probably be overdressed and feel uncomfortable the entire night. Instead, try pairing a nice pair of jeans with a button-up shirt. If you are really trying to impress your date, accessorize with a tie and a blazer.

Maybe the tradition of dates on Valentine's Day is dead, but maybe it is time to revive it. It's an excuse to get dressed up, eat well and have a good time. If dressing up and going out is not your thing, then gather your best friends, order food and settle in with a good movie.

Valentine's Day isn't about the perfect date and a dozen roses. It's about being with the people you care about, whoever they may be. We hope you all have a great Valentine's Day, and spend it with someone great.

Stay Stylish,

Lara and Virginia
